After nearly two years of lingering on the market, Jim Carrey’s iconic Brentwood estate has finally found a buyer. Originally listed at $28.9 million in February 2023, the sprawling Los Angeles mansion is now under contract for $19.75 million, according to Mansion Global.
The property, which Carrey bought in 1994 for $3.8 million, boasts a rich history of Hollywood glamour and luxury living. While the identity of the new owner and final sale price remain undisclosed, the pending sale signals the end of Carrey’s long struggle to offload the estate.
The 62-year-old actor, known for his blockbuster hits like The Mask and Dumb and Dumber, has been candid about his financial challenges in recent months. “I bought a lot of stuff, and I need the money, frankly,” Carrey admitted earlier this year at the UK premiere of Sonic the Hedgehog 3, where he reprised his role as the villain Dr. Robotnik.
Carrey’s public comments about his financial situation gave fans insight into his decision to part with the home. In 2022, he announced that he was considering stepping away from acting, saying he would only return for a project that came to him “from the angels, written in gold ink.”
However, his financial situation appears to have shifted his perspective. “You can’t be definite about these things,” he told Comicbook.com earlier this year. “I said I’d like to retire, but I think I was talking more about ‘power-resting.’ Because as soon as a good idea comes your way or a group of people that you really enjoyed working with, things tend to change.”
A Mansion Fit for a Hollywood Icon
The Brentwood estate stands as a testament to Carrey’s success during the height of his career, when he was commanding $20 million per film. Spanning nearly 11,000 square feet, the luxury residence features five bedrooms, nine bathrooms, and a wealth of lavish amenities.
Among its standout features are six fireplaces, a chef’s kitchen, and an Art Deco-inspired home theater with plush mohair fabric walls and its own popcorn concession room. The property also includes a wine cellar, a yoga and wellness space, and an art gallery—a nod to Carrey’s passion for painting and visual arts.
Outdoor spaces offer a resort-like atmosphere, complete with a tennis court, a waterfall pool, and lush, manicured gardens. The sprawling property has long been a retreat for Carrey, who frequently updated the estate during his three decades of ownership.
A Rollercoaster Journey on the Market
Carrey’s journey to sell the estate has been far from smooth. Despite its luxurious appeal, the property saw multiple price cuts over the years. Initially listed at $28.9 million, it was reduced to $26.5 million, then to $23.95 million, and later to $21.9 million in May 2024. It wasn’t until September, when the price dropped to $19.75 million, that interest finally piqued.
The protracted sales process drew attention from real estate watchers and Carrey’s fans alike, especially given the deep emotional connection he has with the home. The property was purchased in 1994, the same year Carrey’s career skyrocketed thanks to iconic films like Ace Ventura: Pet Detective.
“It’s more than a house,” one insider said. “It’s a reflection of Jim Carrey’s story as one of Hollywood’s most beloved actors.”
An Uncertain Future
While details of Carrey’s next steps remain unclear, his decision to sell the mansion may signal a shift in priorities. His openness about financial struggles has also sparked conversations about the costs of celebrity luxury living.
At the premiere of Sonic the Hedgehog 3, Carrey joked about his return to acting, saying, “I came back to this universe because, first of all, I get to play a genius. Which is a bit of a stretch.”
With the Brentwood mansion sale pending, Carrey’s next move is anyone’s guess. But one thing is certain—the home that witnessed his meteoric rise to fame and his evolution as an actor, artist, and person will soon belong to a new owner.
