Part 3: The Man Helping Me Escape Knew My Stepmother—Then He Handed Me a Secret My Father Left Before He Died

Matthew didn’t move when Elena pulled away from him.

Instead, he calmly turned his phone face down on the seat, as though hiding the screen could somehow erase the name she had just seen.

Elena stared at him.

“You know her.”

It wasn’t a question.

Behind them, the dark SUV flashed its headlights twice.

Matthew’s driver glanced nervously into the rearview mirror.

“Sir, they’re signaling us again.”

Elena immediately reached for the door handle.

Before she could open it, Matthew caught her wrist.

His grip wasn’t painful.

He didn’t pull her toward him.

Yet the warning in his eyes made her stop.

“If you get out of this car now,” he said quietly, “they’ll reach you before you make it ten steps.”

Elena’s heart pounded.

“And if I stay with you?”

For the first time, Matthew’s controlled expression changed.

Only slightly.

But she saw it.

Fear.

“Then you may finally learn why your stepmother has been calling me all week.”

Elena went completely still.

“Isabel?”

Rain streamed across the tinted window beside her.

The car sped along a narrow road surrounded by abandoned warehouses and dark industrial buildings. They were far from the busy city streets now.

Far from crowds.

Far from anyone Elena could easily ask for help.

Matthew reached toward the compartment between the seats.

Elena instinctively moved back.

But he didn’t take out a weapon.

He removed a sealed brown envelope.

Then he placed it between them.

Elena looked down.

Her full name was written across the front.

Elena Vargas.

Her breath caught.

“What is that?”

Matthew stared at the envelope for several seconds.

“Something your father left behind.”

Elena shook her head immediately.

“My father died with nothing.”

Matthew looked directly at her.

“That’s what Isabel wanted you to believe.”

Before Elena could respond, the SUV behind them moved closer.

The driver cursed quietly and accelerated.

The two vehicles passed beneath a damaged streetlight as the dark SUV closed the distance again.

The envelope slipped from Matthew’s hand and landed in Elena’s lap.

She stared at it.

Her father had been gone for years.

According to Isabel, his business had collapsed before his death. The remaining debts had consumed everything.

The company.

The accounts.

The family property.

At least, that was the story Elena had always been told.

With trembling fingers, she opened the envelope.

The first thing inside was an old photograph.

Her father stood outside a large office building, smiling beside three people Elena didn’t recognize.

She turned the photograph over.

A date had been written on the back.

Three weeks before his death.

Beneath the photograph was a thick legal document.

Elena began reading.

Her father’s company name appeared at the top of the first page.

She looked at Matthew.

“What is this?”

Page after page contained financial information, ownership records, and legal agreements Elena barely understood.

Then she reached the final page.

There was a signature line.

Elena expected to see Isabel’s name.

Instead, another name appeared.

She read it once.

Then again.

Her entire body went cold.

“No.”

Matthew said nothing.

Elena lifted the document closer, hoping she had misunderstood.

But the signature remained the same.

It belonged to someone Elena had trusted almost her entire life.

Someone who had stood beside her at her father’s funeral.

Someone who had looked directly into her eyes and told her that everything was gone.

Elena slowly raised her head.

“You knew about this?”

Matthew’s silence gave her the answer.

Outside, the pursuing SUV moved closer again.

But Elena was no longer watching the road.

She was staring at the document in her hands.

Because suddenly, the people following them were no longer the only danger.

The truth about her father’s final days had been hidden for years.

And the name on that last page suggested the betrayal had begun much closer to home than Elena ever imagined.
